Portrait painting
Man always demanded to record himself and his loved ones, and to capture the beautiful moments of his life for prosperity. In art history, portrait painting goes bact to antiquity, and since the Renessaince and in the Dutch style, it is abundant in portraits of affluent clienst. The nobles were served by "star painteers" who, in return received prestige and status. The artists make sure with self-portraits that the prosperity know their names.
The function of an artistic portrait is not primarily to copy hyperrealisticly the face, but to reproduce the model's personality, mood, environment, society and the era he/ she lives.
The portrait is usually no larger than life size. The representation can be the whole body, knee, half, chest or head portrait. The face can be depicted face to face (en face) or side (en profile), or other proportions of the face.
Being personally familiar with the model allows the artist to bring extra life and personality in the artwork, but this is not a prerequisite for a sophisticated painting. A well-executed portrait will bring happy moments not only to the life of the person depicted, but also to his family's!
